CAAMS Research and Publications
The Companion Animal Antimicrobial Stewards (CAAMS) are committed to advancing antimicrobial stewardship through collaborative, outcomes-driven research. By connecting veterinary hospitals, CAAMS seeks to engage in research that supports ethical, effective, and sustainable antimicrobial use in companion animals.
Research Vision
CAAMS research efforts focus on the responsible use of antimicrobials in companion animal veterinary medicine through:
- Multi-institutional collaboration
- Shared outcome and antimicrobial use data
- Evidence-based prescribing guidance
- Integration of antimicrobial stewardship into veterinary curricula and practice
Our overarching aim is to enhance the effectiveness of antimicrobial stewardship efforts and contribute to broader public and animal health goals.
Areas of Interest
– Treatment duration and outcome studies: Establishing optimal durations for common infections to minimize unnecessary antimicrobial use.
– Benchmarking antimicrobial use: Standardizing how use is measured and reported across institutions.
– Integrating antimicrobial stewardship into veterinary curricula: Researching effective teaching strategies and outcomes of antimicrobial stewardship education.
– Linking antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance data: Exploring ways to visualize and interpret antimicrobial use in relation to resistance trends.
Join the Research Effort
CAAMS invites institutions, researchers, and clinicians to engage in its research initiatives by:
– Participating in studies
– Attending research-focused seminars and workshops
– Collaborating on funding proposals
Whether you are based in academia, clinical practice, industry, or public health, your participation shapes a more responsible future for antimicrobial use in veterinary medicine.

Fellman CL, Janovyak E, Bollig ER, DeStefano IM, Diaz-Campos D, Granick JL. J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2024 Aug 21;262(11):1552-1558. doi: 10.2460/javma.24.07.0478.
This publication highlights the outcomes of the first national companion animal antimicrobial stewardship workshop, identifying educational, clinical, and research priorities to advance antimicrobial stewardship in academic settings. The workshop laid the groundwork for CAAMS and catalyzed working group formation across institutions.
Granick JL, Fellman CL, DeStefano IM, Diaz-Campos D, Janovyak E, Beaudoin AL, Bollig ER. J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2024 Sep 13;262(11):1485-1490. doi: 10.2460/javma.24.07.0477.
This publication provides a baseline assessment of antimicrobial stewardship and infection prevention and control activities across veterinary schools. The findings underscore variability in current practices and highlight opportunities for unified stewardship strategies and inter-institutional collaboration.
